The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has confirmed that one of its F/A-18D Hornet fighter jets successfully executed a precautionary landing at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) today after encountering engine difficulties mid-flight.

According to military statements, the twin-engine combat aircraft experienced technical anomalies while operating in the regional airspace. Adhering strictly to standard safety protocols, the flight crew immediately initiated emergency procedures and diverted the jet to the nearest suitable airfield, which was KKIA in Sabah.

The RMAF confirmed that both the pilot and the co-pilot landed safely without sustaining any injuries. No major damage to the aircraft or airport infrastructure was reported, and commercial flight operations at the international airport remained largely unaffected by the incident.

A specialized technical team from the RMAF is expected to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the root cause of the mid-air engine malfunction. The Boeing-built F/A-18D Hornet remains a vital asset in Malaysia’s tactical air defense inventory, and fleet safety remains a top priority for the nation’s defense forces.
